Beaufort House Heritage Hotel History
|
"There's gold in them there hills". A favourite cry in the town of Adelong back in the 1850's during the Gold Rush days. Adelong has travelled history without losing its "pioneer charm", with Beaufort House playing a significant role in the analogue of the town's yesteryears.
Ever evolving with time Beaufort House as it is known today has had numerous personalities and faces serving locals and travellers since the site was first built in 1858 and known as the "Old Commercial Store ", the hub of commerce within Adelong, a good old "you name it", they had it "providore".

Business was booming during the "Gold Rush" days and in 1864 business had expanded with the Commercial Hotel (the first licensed hotel in Adelong) opening its' doors along side the Commercial Store. Business and trade boomed through the many years of gold mining, and then during the early 1920's a large part of Adelong was destroyed by fire taking the old Commercial Store with it. The Commercial Hotel was left in tack, though the owners of the time took up the opportunity then to rebuild the Commercial Hotel, bigger and better, in 1926 as the existing 2-storey structure. In later years it then became the "Gold Reef Hotel" which continued trading as a pub and hotel until the sale of its' license in 1978.
There are reminders of yesteryear throughout the building with the frosted "CH" Commercial Hotel symbol on the window panes. Many a local have expressed "if only these walls could talk". The "Gold Reef Hotel" was renamed "Beaufort Guesthouse" and again was renamed "Beaufort House" by the current owners.

The Present owners have restored the building to its' former glory, enhancing many of its' original features, creating a boutique, private hotel environment. It is one of the few hotels of old, which has remained in it's original internal and external state, having survived without major changes as were the fad of 1970's & 1980's with the old pubs. With the addition of European antiques, existing furnishings from the original Commercial Hotel, (1860's - 1920's), and many original pieces, there is a real charm of yesteryear. Beaufort House truly is unique.
There are many historical buildings within the main street of Adelong, many built during the 1900's, so to experience and gain a feeling of Australia's colourful past, a visit to Adelong is not to be missed.
Adelong History tour is available through the Adelong Museum on request at anytime and a walk to the heritage listed 'Adelong Falls Gold Reserve' ruins is a must to revisit the old gold rush days of the 1850's. They are one of the most outstanding ruins of the gold rush days left in Australia today.
